Students at ThunderRidge and Castle View high schools were planning to dance the night away on April 4, but blizzard forecasts prompted both Douglas County schools to postpone prom.
The decision was made based on the severe weather forecasts.
"We don't want to put our students in jeopardy and would rather err on the side of students' safety," said Dr.
Steve Herzog, chief operating officer for DCSD.
Castle View junior
Dakota Klossner was trying on his tux at Men's Wearhouse on April 2 when he heard the news.
"I was kind of expecting it, because word was going around that they might cancel it," he said. "I think it was a good idea. It was pretty icy out on Saturday night."
At first, Klossner was worried that he might still have to pay for his tux, but Men's Wearhouse agreed to re-schedule the rentals for April 25 for no additional charge.
Since the original location of the prom, the Wildlife Experience in Parker, was booked on the new date, the prom was moved to The Hyatt Regency in the Denver Tech Center.
"I think it might even be better. We've heard the hotel is a lot nicer," Klossner said.
Klossner's mom,
Katie Klossner, one of Castle View's After Prom organizers, said Brunswick Zone in Lone Tree agreed to reschedule the event with no penalty. She added that The Cat's Meow in Castle Rock absorbed the costs of the corsage and boutonniere orders that had already been made, instead of making the kids pay for them.
"We have been really impressed with the way the business community has been such a help with the postponement, and the support they have shown our teens," Katie Klossner said.
Even though everything worked out, Klossner said she thinks students "were a little bummed."
"The weather wasn't that bad, and they were hanging out on Saturday night, thinking oh, I could be at prom," she said.
When ThunderRidge junior class president
Tyler Drum heard the news, he said he was a little disappointed but more worried about the work involved with rescheduling. He and others in student government quickly got to work calling the caterer, DJ and decorator to reschedule, which went smoothly for the most part, he said.
ThunderRidge will have its prom May 16 at the same place and time as previously scheduled, Wings Over the Rockies.
The student government did not lose any deposit money, but Drum said he has some friends who lost limo deposits.
"I think they were pretty irritated, but there is nothing they can do," he said. He added he had no problem rescheduling his tux because he called as soon as he found out about the postponement.
Also due to the weather forecasts, the ACT at Chaparral High School, Mountain Vista High School, Ponderosa High School and ThunderRidge High School were canceled. Rescheduled test dates will be available on the ACT Web site,
www.actstudent.org/regist/reschedule.html.
