Familiar faces

Editor's note: Visit our Faces of Highlands Ranch page, where YourHub.com staff and readers can introduce you to more people who make this part of the metro area what it is.

Every small community has at its core the "familiar face".

They are behind cash registers and changing the oil in the family car. These faces know your name, ask about the kids and wonder how your holidays went.

One smiling familiar face I know many of us here in Highlands Ranch are familiar with is Zachary (Zach) Malham. Zach is the managing partner of the Egg and I restaurant in TownCenter.

Anyone who has had a meal or coffee at this local eatery has been greeted and welcomed by Zach, if you visit there more then once your part of his family.

A transplant from Chicago, Zachary has lived in Colorado with his wife Donna for over 30 years. Although his love for the job and his patrons is obvious, he will tell anyone that he has had a lifelong passion for photography.

Zach has combined this with the joy so many of us here in Colorado have for the beauty and nostalgia of the Old West. Photographing lost highways, forgotten buildings, pueblo ruins and drive-in theatres (many of which were taken down within months or weeks of being captured on film) his interests are varied and true to the nature of vanishing cultures.

Rather then waiting for a shot Zach prefers to, "shoot from the hip" capturing the scene as it captured him, using film to define emotion. His personal preference in medium is film photography in black and white, feeling that he likes to let the viewer do the work of filling in subtle nuances and interpretation.

He enjoys working personally with the Developer in the process of hand development of black and white to achieve the tonality and quality of the photo he wants.

Having been in many Juried Exhibitions, Galleries, Special Events and One Artist shows in Colorado and Illinois, he has also been a featured speaker at The Highlands Ranch Photography Association and is currently showing in the Sixth Annual Lone Tree Photographic Art Show and Sale which will finish it's run May 3, 2008 at the Lone Tree Golf Club, 9808 Sunningdale Boulevard.

Next time you see a "familiar face" there is an interesting person behind it.
