Effective (and Fun) Outdoor Workouts

Renew and refresh. That's what we think of when spring rolls around. It's time to rejuvenate your body and your mind with nutritious fruits and vegetables, mood-elevating sunshine (just don't forget the sunscreen) and a fresh take on calorie burning. Looking for some ideas for fun outdoor workouts? We've got some right here.

§ Whitewater rafting. Granted, if you don't live on the Colorado or Arkansas River rafting is tough to do several times a week, but once in a while it makes for a great workout mixed with a lot of fun. More importantly, you can do it with family and friends, take in fantastic scenery and torch a ton of calories while paddling.

§ Horseback riding. If you're thinking how is that exercise when the horse is doing all the work, you've obviously never had to hold on to a horse while it was running. Try it. You'll see what we mean when we say you'll burn some calories.

§ Volleyball. Most folks think they need to join a league, but that's not the case. There are sports bars that have courts in their parking lots, and we're here to tell you that two-man volleyball is a serious workout. Of course, you can join a league if you want to. You'll not only enjoy the exercise but also the camaraderie.

§ Gardening. Who knew, but this is one of Dan's favorite leisure time activities. He enjoys working in the yard, tending to his vegetable garden and creating the perfect lawn. Not only does the outside of the house look beautiful, but Dan benefits from the calorie burn and resistance exercise.

§ Badminton. Yes, we're talking about the game our parents played in the backyard oh so many years ago. It's back and becoming more popular. Some local rec centers even have badminton leagues. The best thing about this game is that anyone can buy an inexpensive badminton set from their local sporting goods store and get a great workout at home with the family.
