Jim Doty is April's featured artist in a Pottery Workshop Series sponsored by Foothills Park & Recreation District and The Pottery Studio Gallery. Sharing his 37 years as a production potter, Jim will demonstrate wheel-throwing, wax-resist glazing, and carving techniques at The Pottery Studio Gallery (5739 South Curtice St.) from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Two weeks later on Saturday, April 26, from 1-5 p.m., workshop participants will enjoy hands-on training at Foothills Park & Recreation District's Ridge Recreation Center (6613 S. Ward St.). For registration information, call 303.409.2612 or visit www.ifoothills.org.
In 1971, Jim received his Bachelor of Arts in Ceramics from San Jose State University. At that time, there were very few production potters and it was not considered a suitable career to pursue. After making tens of thousands of pots, Jim is happy with his choice. In addition to teaching at Mesa College in Grand Junction, Jim has taught pottery to many individuals through private instruction. Jim feels teaching is great way to learn new views of clay, make the basics fresh again, and challenge himself beyond his comfort zone. Represented by several galleries in Colorado and California, Jim's work is included in Kirkland Museum's permanent collection.
