Highlands Ranch Christian Middle School sixth grade students were challenged with the idea of what it meant to "pay it forward" after viewing a clip of the
Hollywood
movie and learning about the "domino effect" in chapel. After much discussion about how we are called to serve others and what "paying it forward" might look like, students were given an assignment to develop a "pay it forward" idea and carry it out. Ideas ranged from bake sales to peer tutoring. As of May 1, these projects have been carried out and the results are as follows:
$100 was earned through doughnut sales for a 5-year-old little girl stricken with Cancer currently residing at Children's Hospital.
$148 was raised through a bake sale at school to purchase school supplies for an Orphanage in India
$40 was raised by selling homemade bracelets to benefit the Autism Society of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Several students have stocked their cars with snacks and water to give to the homeless.
Free dog walking for neighbors.
Paying for the people behind them in a McDonald's Drive thru.
Shoveling walks for neighbors without being asked.
Mowing lawns for elderly and disabled people in neighborhood.
Several Babysitting jobs earned money for Tsunami victims and Salvation Army.
Cooked and served dinner for the homeless.
Knitted scarves for Denver Rescue Mission.
Donated video games and DVD's to Children's Hospital.
Several doughnut sales raised money for Leukemia Foundation, and Katrina victims.
Made blankets for the homeless.
Peer tutoring in English and Math.
Collecting food for the homeless.
Giving gift cards to homeless in area.
Through these projects, hopefully students have learned to look outside of themselves, gotten a glimpse of people in need and blessed others through their efforts.
