That's how campers describe their experience at Camp Wapiyapi, a residential summer camp especially designed for youngsters who are fighting cancer.
The camp, founded by medical students at the University of Colorado, brings campers and their siblings together for a week of camping experiences cancer patients can only dream about.
Until now that is. The camp is staffed with doctors and nurses who give of their time to be sure the campers are safe while having fun doing a multitude of activities such as fishing, riding, and rafting.
Camp Wapiyapi depends on donations to make it happen and the Cougar Run Dream Team, a student service group, has made this camp their number one focus for spring fundraising.
Nicole DiPasquale
, Dream Team Sponsor and fifth-grade teacher at Cougar Run, started the project by showing the students a video of camp life. That's all it took. The group has planned crazy hat day (pay a dollar, wear a hat to class), spirit day and other ongoing activities to support students for Camp Wapiyapi.
The Cougar Run parent organization, PIE, is behind the effort and has donated equipment and support for popcorn sales during the school carnival. Dream Team members embrace the idea of supporting their peers in this way, and they are gaining valuable experience presenting in front of groups, organizing events and following through on their project to successful completion. Ask them, and they'll tell you: "It's probably the best project of the year!"
