Working hard in the neighborhood
Contributed by: YourHub.com on 6/19/2008

The people who live and work in Highlands Ranch have made the community what it is today. Check out these profiles of hard-working folks in your area. Look for more featured neighbors in the Faces of Highlands Ranch print section, scheduled to appear June 28.

Ed Susman, Bicycle Pedalr co-owner

Gearing up for the 2008 Courage Classic at the end of July, Debbie Johnson of Castle Rock stopped to see Ed Susman, co-owner of Bicycle Pedalr, 2030 E. County Line Road in Littleton, to pick up her new road bike. Susman rigged up the bike, a Trek Madone 4.5, and has Johnson practice pedaling. Susman measured the angles of Johnson's arms and legs while riding the bike and made custom adjustments to fit the bike to Johnson's body. Susman passed along tips for shifting weight when going down hills and around curves and made sure Johnson was familiar with all the functions of the bike. Johnson has been cycling seriously for about 18 years and comes the Bicycle Pedalr for all her riding needs. "It's a good shop," Johnson said.

Bailey Combs, HRCA lifeguard
Bailey Combs, 18, of Highlands Ranch, stands watch June 12 at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center at Eastridge, 9568 S. University Blvd., as Zachary Payton, 9, comes down a water slide. Combs, a 2008 Mountain Vista High School grad, has been a lifeguard at the recreation center for the past three years. "It's just a fun job," she said. "It's really flexible and you get to work with people who are your own age."

Molly Carlson, Beadniks employee
There isn't much rhyme or reason in the jewelry Molly Carlson designs in her down time at Beadniks, 9325 Dorchester St., Highlands Ranch. Carlson likes to randomly choose beads for her pieces to show customers that you don't need to be an expert to make jewelry and demonstrate that everyone has their own personal style. Carlson has been working at the specialty bead shop for about a year and will be a senior at Mountain Vista High School this fall.

Tosha Keaney, Posh Tosh Boutique owner
Babies are what Tosha Keaney does best. With a brood of her own that are often at her shop, located at 9315 Dorchester St. #108, Highlands Ranch, Keaney knows baby and children's fashions. The boutique has been opened just under a year and has added a maternity line to their selection. "We get the moms who come in when they're pregnant and we get to grow with their babies," Keaney said.

Alex Nicodemus, Ice Cream Wagon driver
Parked next to the skate park at Redstone Park, 3280 Redstone Park Circle, in Highlands Ranch, on the windy afternoon of June 12, Ice Cream Wagon driver Alex Nicodemus just finishes selling cold treats to some of the younger skateboarders. Nicodemus said he is a bartender, and driving the ice cream truck is temporary summer work for him. His route is Highlands Ranch, and he said he drives around at about five mph. On average, he said he makes about $100 a weekday and up to $200 on a weekend day. His biggest seller? A SpongeBob SquarePants fruit punch and cotton candy ice cream bar.

Trisha McCombs, co-owner of Arts on Fire
Trisha McCombs, co-owner of Arts on Fire, lifts up a bowl June 12 to study her painting as she works on a commission piece for a local teacher. Arts on Fire is a paint-your-own-pottery and glass fusing studio located at 9315 Dorchester St., #105, in Highlands Ranch. McCombs and her sister, Tracy Hines, have run the business for about five years -- 2 ½ years at the current location and 2 ½ years at a previous location at University Boulevard and Highlands Ranch Parkway. McCombs has lived in Highlands Ranch for about 12 years, and Hines for about five years.
