Quilters! What in the World is a Bed Turning?
Contributed by: Dusty Darrah on 5/30/2008

A Bed Turning, similar to how it was done in the old west., is demonstrated each year at our Firehouse Quilts Annual Quilt Show, using nearly100 snuggle quilts that volunteers have just completed so our visitors are able to view them up close. These quilts will be distributed to Colorado Fire Depts., battered women's shelters, victim advocate offices, etc. soon after our show this year July 18 & 19, 2008. These snuggle quilts are made especially to be given to children in crisis or in need.

But What IS a Bed Turning?
In the 'olden days', when a lady wanted to show all the quilts she had made throughout the years, she would invite all the ladies in town over for refreshments and a Bed Turning.

Before the guests arrived, a friend would help her spread all of the quilts on top of her bed, one at a time, just as if it were the only quilt on the bed. They were stacked on top of each other so you could only see one quilt at a time.

Her guests gathered around the bed, waiting to see her beautiful quilt work. She would describe each one as it was revealed, talking about the techniques she used, how she chose the fabricsand how patterns or blocks were put together for each quilt. Then they'd 'turn down'the top of that quilt to the bottom of the bed so the next quilt could be seen. They continued to 'turn down' each quilt until all ofher quilts had been displayed.

The ooohs & ahhs of her guests could probably be heard in the next county.

It was a fun afternoon and refreshments were served while
the ladies buzzed about all the pretty quilts they had just seen.
