Happy birthday, America!
Contributed by: Anna Thorne on 7/5/2006

Many countries have gained independence from their motherland, but none have done it in the way that the Puritans gained their freedom over 200 years ago.

Without any outside aid from other countries, the Puritans decided it was time to break away from Great Britain. So they did. One foggy gray morning, they began to sneak out of their country....boat by boat, ship by ship, they sailed for a new land.

After many struggles, trials, wars and other sacrifices, they established their independence from Britain and became the United States of America.

They did not know it then, but the USA was destined for success. We are now the wealthiest nation in the world, where all are free to join in the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. There are rules, to be sure, but they are rules that enable Americans to keep their freedoms.

We celebrate our freedom every day, with or without meaning to, but there is a certain day each year that brings joy into the heart of every patriotic American.

Simply the mention of "July 4th" conjures up images of lively picnics, happy families, bubbly laughter, and brilliant fireworks. There are other occasions on which we bring out our sparklers and firecrackers, but none are like the Fourth of July.

On that day, we delight in attending parties and parades and decorating ourselves in red, white, and blue--the colors of our country's flag, affectionately known as "Old Glory". The smells of popcorn and animals and sunscreen and summertime fill the air, and we smile and enjoy ourselves to the fullest.

We are proud to be Americans, and we want the world to know.
