Douglas County Sheriff
David A. Weaver
was pleased to announce that Deputy
Andrew Bec
hert has obtained his Jail Officer Certification from the American Jail Association.
Deputy Bechert is the first Douglas County Deputy and the only Colorado law enforcement officer to hold this certification. Certification is part of a process called credentialing and focuses specifically on the individual.
It provides documented evidence to the public that the individual has been examined by an independent professional organization and found to possess current competency in his/her field. Certification documents the mastery of a strong level of knowledge in the specialty.
It provides a form of recognition and achievement, indicating to one's peers that the individual has taken the time and effort, beyond job experience, to learn the Body of Knowledge, thus exhibiting a significant commitment to working in the profession.
Deputy Bechert has been with the Sheriff's Office since June 2000. He started out as a detention specialist after serving 21 years in the Army. He went to the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Academy in 2001 and graduated with Tops Skills Honors. In 2005 he was named Deputy of the Year by the command staff.
Deputy Bechert serves as a Team Leader for the Special Deployment Unit (SDU) as well as being a leader and trainer for the Special Operations Response Team (SORT). He is currently assigned to the Work Release section as the Coordinator. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the detention facility and plans to spend his career there.
Deputy Bechert applied to the take the Jail Officer Certification course in May of this year and took the test in October. He received his certification announcement in November.
"Deputy Bechert is the kind of deputy that others look up to and see as a mentor. He took the initiative to expand his expertise and I commend him for his hard work. I am very proud to have Deputy Bechert on my staff", stated Sheriff Weaver.
