A group of five inmates at the Douglas County Jail had something to celebrate April 28. They participated in the first graduation ceremony after receiving their GEDs. Until February, inmates who took the GED class did not have the opportunity to take the test until they were released. Molly Elkins, a Literacy Specialist at Douglas County Libraries was able to get testing in Douglas County and with the support of Lt. Keith Penry and his program managers, Kim True and Rozanne Houston testing occurred. Lt. Penry has said, "This program provides and opens doors for the inmates. The opportunity for success for the individuals is increased exponentially. We are glad to be helping those who have not had the opportunity before."
Douglas County Libraries has supported GED instruction for several years. Volunteers tutor GED candidates one on one at the library and a small group of library volunteers have been teaching small group GED classes at the Douglas County Jail since the jail opened in 1998.
Do you want to earn your high school diploma by taking the GED exam? Now you have the opportunity to study and take the test here in Douglas County. Douglas County Libraries and Douglas County Schools are working together to make it happen for you. For more information about test preparation opportunities, testing dates, or to volunteer as a GED tutor, please contact Molly Elkins at 303-791-READ or email melkins@dclibraries.org .
