Denver, September 29, 2008- The Regional Transportation District (RTD) will host a series of public meetings in each of the 15 RTD districts to get public input on the options for moving forward with the agency's FasTracks transit expansion program. RTD is among the many public entities across the country facing challenges in providing services and projects during these sluggish economic times. FasTracks continues to be impacted by slumping sales tax revenues and escalating construction materials costs, like steel, copper and concrete and fuel. If costs and revenues continue on their current trends, RTD estimates that it could cost $7.9 billion to build the FasTracks plan by 2017.
Beginning Thursday, Sept. 25, RTD will hold 16 meetings - one in each of the RTD districts and a lunch-time meeting in downtown Denver -to seek public input on the current viable options for delivering FasTracks. The meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with the exception of the lunch-time meeting that will be at noon.
The meetings will include an overview of the status of FasTracks and explanations of the options for FasTracks. The public will then be given the opportunity to offer their feedback in a few different ways - automatic response during the meetings, verbal comments, through the FasTracks Web site, or by filling out a public comment card. The input will then assist the RTD Board in determining the best options for delivering FasTracks.
