IMPACT OF THE COLORADO NONPROFIT SECTOR RECOGNIZED
Joint Legislative Reception Draws Record Numbers

Denver - On Thursday, February 9th, over 100 volunteers, board members, and staff from area nonprofit organizations participated in a joint legislative reception hosted by the Colorado Trust. Representatives from the Junior League of Denver (JLD), the Colorado Association of Funders, and the Colorado Nonprofit Association assembled at the event to share their collective legislative priorities with the nearly 20 legislators in attendance.

The key message of the event was to recognize the value of the nonprofit sector as partner to government. Nonprofits are public servants and make Colorado a better place to live through service to the community. According to a recent study, 98 percent of Coloradoans said they either give goods or services to nonprofits (2005 Denver Foundation Study). The nonprofit sector in Colorado represents 5 percent of Colorado gross state product with over 17,000 charitable nonprofits in the state, and nonprofit expenditures reached $10.1 billion in 2003 (National Center for Charitable Statistics Table Wizard).

“The state has started to realize the importance and influence of nonprofits,” said Representative Bob McCluskey (R-Larimer). “The Junior League of Denver has certainly been a great team player and contributor to this valuable sector.”

Among the issues supported by the Junior League of Denver this session is the Standard Safety Belt Enforcement Law (HB 1125), which passed the House of Representatives 33-32, and is headed to the Senate for approval. This bill would make failure to wear a seatbelt a primary offense and enable police officers to enforce the law as standard traffic offense. If passed, this law will:
• Promote the use of safety belts, including booster and car seats, for all children
• Require standard enforcement of the safety belt law

The Junior League of Denver, Incorporated (founded in 1918), is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. With nearly 2,000 members, the JLD returned over 55,000 volunteer hours and tens of thousands of dollars to the Metro Denver community during fiscal year 2004-2005. The Junior League of Denver is a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which represents nearly 300 Leagues across the United States and around the world.
