Making noise on Capitol Hill
Contributed by: polli ring on 6/23/2006

The roots of democracy are alive and well in the heart of Highlands Ranch, even among its future voters.

Eleven-year-old Alex Ring has experienced what few Americans have and what all U. S citizens hold dear, democracy in action. Alex, along with his family, traveled to visit our nation's capitol this June as advocates for the American Diabetes Association to help find a cure for diabetes.

Alex was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes while still in preschool. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that requires injectable insulin for survival.

The complications of diabetes are devastating and include kidney failure, blindness, amputation, and heart disease. A cure for this unforgiving disease is possible, but not without increased funding for the National Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control and most importantly expanded stem cell research.

Alex Ring, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, made his presence known on Capitol Hill. Alex spent an entire day meeting with and asking Colorado legislators and their staff including Tom Tancredo, Wayne Allard and Ken Salazar to support him and billions of others like him, in the search for a cure. Alex explained his challenges, hopes, and mostly his dreams of being cured and having a life like other kids his age, free from needles and the fear of complications.

This young man is a model for others. Alex is a model for the chronically afflicted, for those fighting for their own personal causes and for those brave enough to face the challenges that life presents them with. We salute you Alex!
