Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a greenbelt area in Highlands Ranch where they discovered several juveniles setting off acid bombs. Several juveniles may face charges.
On April 25 at around 6:30 p.m., Douglas County deputies responded to the Spring Gulch Park greenbelt area behind the 1900 block of Crystal Peak in Highlands Ranch, on the report of juveniles setting off pipe bombs.
When deputies arrived on scene they located several juveniles who had been setting off acid bombs, not pipe bombs.
The juveniles showed deputies the location where they discovered three devices, one that had not gone off but was leaking. The Douglas County Bomb Team and Hazmat Team were called. A Hazmat Technician collected the devices and took them in for evidence.
Seven juvenile males, ages 14 to 15, were identified as being involved in the incident and were released to their parents, pending the filing of charges.
Detectives will likely recommend charges of possession, use, or removal of explosive or incendiary devices, which is a class 3 felony.
This is still an open investigation and additional details from the case are not releasable at this time.
Sheriff
Weaver
wants to stress to every citizen that even though no one was injured in this situation, these homemade devices can cause serious injuries. The device that had not gone off was located in the green belt area.
"This can be especially dangerous for an unsuspecting citizen who is taking a walk and spots what they believe to be 'trash' and gets hurt while tying to clean up their neighborhood," stated Sheriff Weaver. "If a citizen ever comes upon some sort of device, whether it is plastic, glass, or metal and it is of a suspicious nature, do not touch it. Call local law enforcement right away."
