An alarming number of vehicle break-ins in recent weeks has prompted the sheriff's office to urge residents to lock up their cars and garages.
Reports of trespasses have hit the communities of Castle Pines North and Highlands Ranch particularly hard, according to the sheriff's office.
Some of the common areas that were targeted were vehicles parked in apartments and condos in Highlands Ranch. Investigators are trying to determine if these trespasses are being committed by the same person.
In most trespass reports, the owner of the car admits to leaving the vehicle unlocked. But there also are reports of car windows being smashed in order to gain entry.
Commonly targeted items include iPods, cell phones and laptop computers.
Sheriff
David Weaver
is asking the public to help fight crime by making sure their car doors are shut and locked, as well as keeping garage doors closed and secured. The sheriff's office also encourages residents to lock and secure their car doors, remove any valuable items from their cars and to keep garage doors closed.
"Douglas County is a safe place to live, but we do need to realize that some criminals treat our communities as their own personal shopping malls," Weaver said. "Let's work together to send a message that we are not open for business. These simple steps of locking your car doors, closing your garage doors and encouraging your neighbors to do the same will go a long way in preventing crime."
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information on any of these vehicle trespasses to call the tip line at 303-660-7579.
If you are looking to take a more proactive approach to crime prevention in your neighborhoods, contact the community resource unit of the sheriff's office at 303-660-7544. They can give you information on how to start a Neighborhood Watch Program in your area.
