In May two Highlands Ranch authors attended a book launch for the Healing Project in Manhattan. Liz Van Ingen and Barbara Terrell's essays were published in
Voices of Alzheimer's and
Voices of Lung Cancer, respectively.
"When my writing partner Liz mentioned the Healing Project to me last year, I never dreamed it would lead to two of my essays appearing in print." Terrell's article in
Voices of Lung Cancer is in honor of her mother-in-law. It reveals what everyone going through a serious illness craves. She also has an article in
Voices of Breast Cancer, that will launch on October 16 th. "My goal is to let people know that a positive attitude and a sense of humor are keys to overcoming adversity."
Terrell is a two-year breast cancer survivor. "I about fell over when I was diagnosed, since my family is a heart attack/stroke clan." Writing about her experiences helped her keep friends and loved ones informed on her progress. "The nicest compliment I received was from a male co-worker. He said that after reading my story, he felt like he could handle it if it happened to his wife."
Liz Van Ingen wrote about discovering that her life-long love had Alzheimer's. "At first I thought I was going crazy. No one believed me when I'd tell them that something was wrong with my husband." Her life turned upside down, but she found solace in recounting their story.
Terrell and Van Ingen were thrilled when they were at a writer's meeting at the Highlands Ranch Tattered Cover and saw their books on the shelf.
"It was exciting, and made going to New York that much sweeter."
Van Ingen agreed. "Our trip to New York changed my opinion of New Yorkers. Everyone was very nice to us and helpful. Cab drivers showed us pictures of their kids. Fellow subway riders assisted us by telling us where to get off for certain sites. The trip was a wonderful ."

"The Healing Project is an outstanding organization that is publicizing diseases that most people don't want to discuss. They lace personal stories with helpful information in order to assist those going through difficult times," said Van Ingen.
