Ranch twirler places in top 10 at Disney
Contributed by: Amber Lena on 2/22/2008

Haley Lena, 8, of Highlands Ranch attended her first International Baton Twirling Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex Feb. 15th-18th 2008. Known across the twirling world as "TWIRL MANIA" , this was the 13th year for the contest and it lived up to it's name and Disney standards!

The best of the best competed for the Grand Titles of Twirl Mania Gold, Collegiate Classic, Team & Corps Championships & Miss Twirl Mania just to mention a few. All Twirlers were allowed to try out for the Disney's daytime and nighttime parades, perform at the Showcase at the Galaxy Palace Theater in the Magic Kingdom, and new this year, the Collegiate Classic finalists performed in EPCOT.

Haley competed in the Beginner 7-9 age division and brought home the following awards: 2nd Place in Open Military Marching, 2nd Place in Open Basic Marching, 3rd in Open Best Appearing, 6th in Open X Strut and tied for 14th in Open Solo. In the Miss Twirl Mania Beg. 7-9 age division she placed 4th in Modeling, 8th in X- Strut, and 11th in Solo for an overall placement of 8th in the Miss Twirl Mania.

She was also chosen to perform in the daytime parade in the Magic Kingdom. What a thrill and an honor it was for her and fellow twirling athletes to be recognized for all of their hard work.

The 3 day event ended with the "Awards Extravaganza" held at Disney's Hollywood Studios in the Indiana Jones Theater at 8pm on Sunday. In addition to trophies, medallions, and other unique awards, several scholarships were awarded to individuals and well as teams.

Haley would like to thank her family, friends and community for helping raise money to attend this amazing competition. Plans are in the making for Twirl Mania '09 already!

Haley was one of four girls from the state of Colorado to attend the competition. In Colorado, twirling is recognized as one of the fastest growing youth sports. For more info on how you can get involved: Amtwirls@mac.com or contact the Colorado Baton Council at 303-683-5599.
