Wind Crest man takes road trip to visit retirees
Contributed by: Steve Shultz/YourHub.com on 4/2/2008

A resident of a local retirement community has decided to turn a trip to visit family and friends into a road trip to visit other retirement homes throughout the nation.

According to Erickson Retirement Communities, which manages Wind Crest retirement community in Highlands Ranch, Norm Fox, 75, a Wind Crest resident, has begun a monthlong driving excursion to each of the company's 20 campuses throughout the U.S.

The Erickson network currently comprises campuses in Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. Fox said he expects to drive 7,000 miles in his 2003 Ford Explorer.

"I decided to take a road trip to visit family and friends in Texas, Florida, upstate New York, Washington and West Virginia," said Fox, who is a retired aerospace engineer for Martin Marietta in Colorado. "When I realized the trip would take me to neighboring Erickson campuses, I decided to make a stop at each one."

According to Erickson, Fox already has visited two Erickson communities-- Highlands Springs in Dallas and Eagle's Trace in Houston. He currently is visiting with friends in Chandler, Texas.

"Driving is what I love to do," he said. "I will keep doing it for as long as I can. Thus far, this has been a great experience. Many of the Erickson residents are anticipating my arrival and provide a warm welcome. I have found that great staff and residents don't only exist at Wind Crest."

Fox said he is using the excursion as an opportunity to lend assistance to any clubs or organizations that may need a helping hand.

"I am very involved with different clubs at Wind Crest," he said. "I particularly help with the on-campus television station, and I am delighted to assist wherever I can."

In addition to his willingness to help out, Fox said he wants to observe the differences and similarities among the campuses.

"When you hear about residents from other campuses, you always wonder what it's like, and this is my opportunity to get a first-hand view of what goes on at the different campuses," he said.

Fox said his passion for travel developed while he worked for Martin Marietta, and continued through his 45 years of camping and driving his RV.

"I love to travel around and see different places," Fox said. "I particularly enjoy driving; ever since I lost my wife I have found great therapeutic value in it. It really helps me a lot."

Great story, Steve. Your portrayal of Mr. Fox's adventurous spirit, vibrant mind and can-do attitude makes an outstanding profile of a retirement community resident.
