Two fires broke out in Highlands Ranch on the Fourth of July, one in the northern side of the community and one in the south.
The first was a 20-acre grass fire that was reported at 4:16 p.m. July 4 at 10218 Grigs Road, south of the Recreation Center at Southridge.
Roland Seno,
Littleton Fire Rescue operations division chief, said the fire was 1/2-mile south of the nearest house. The fire was 100 percent contained at 6:42 p.m.
Seno said investigators have determined the fire was caused by fireworks, and three juveniles are being questioned. He said a total of 21 units responded to the fire, including fire engines from Parker-South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.
The second fire, reported at 5:23 p.m., started in an open space area at 9051 S. Kenwood Court. The fire occupied seven to eight acres and spread to a fence separating the open space from houses. Seno said a 35-foot pine tree caught fire, in turn catching the side of a house on the 9000 block of South Laurel Court on fire. He said the fire was extinguished before it spread to the interior of the home. Damage to the house is estimated at $32,500. Investigators also believe this fire was caused by fireworks, and one adult is being questioned.
Seno said a total of 16 units responded to this fire. Parker-South Metro Fire Rescue Authority assisted with this fire as well. Both fires still are under investigation.
In Lone Tree, a small grass fire was extinguished during the city's July 4 fireworks display held at Sweetwater Park as part of the city's Independence Day Celebration.
