If you run a nonprofit quilting group, it seems fitting to host an annual quilt show to raise funds for your cause.
So says Firehouse Quilts of Colorado founder and organizer
Dusty Darrah,
of Highlands Ranch. The group held its third annual quilt show July 18 and 19 at Cherry Hills Community Church, 3900 Grace Blvd. in Highlands Ranch.
Firehouse Quilts is a nonprofit group of volunteers who make and donate quilts to local fire departments, hospitals, victim advocate offices and battered women's shelters to be given to children in times of crisis.
Darrah said this year's fundraiser brought in approximately $1,450, after expenses. In addition to the money raised from charging admission, there was an entry fee for each quilt entered into the show. The money raised will be used to purchase supplies for making more quilts. Darrah said a 40-yard roll of batting, which is enough for 45 small quilts, typically costs $400.
Darrah said 110 quilts were on display at this year's event, about 20 made by Firehouse Quilts volunteers. The others were crafted by locals. Darrah said 78 of the quilters were new to the show this year.
Firehouse Quilts was established in 2003 and attained nonprofit status in 2005. Darrah said it all began after a few years of quilting and a talk with Littleton Fire Rescue. She said she began quilting in 2000 and, a few years later, inquired if Littleton Fire Rescue had a quilt program for children.
"They said, 'When can you start?'" Darrah said. "I was really kind of shocked they didn't have a program already."
Shortly before speaking with Littleton Fire Rescue, Darrah had been looking for some kind of volunteer opportunity. She said the idea of helping children by making quilts really clicked with her.
"It was a combination of wanting to give back to the community and finding something that interested me," she said.
Darrah said Firehouse Quilts currently has about 40 active volunteers. Volunteers meet twice a month at the Recreation Center at Northridge, 8801 S. Broadway, every first Thursday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and every third Thursday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, go to
