Churches organize annual food drive
Contributed by: Steve Shultz/YourHub.com on 7/22/2008

]For the third year in a row, a group of churches in Highlands Ranch has banded together to coordinate a food drive on Colorado Cares Day.

From 9 a.m. to noon July 26, residents may drop off bags of nonperishable food, baby food and care items, personal hygiene items and household items at the Highlands Ranch Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9800 Foothills Canyon Blvd.

Church members will be distributing fliers and grocery bags throughout the community through July 26, and will pick up donations at residents' houses as well.

The food drive will benefit Inter-Faith Community Services, an organization that provides human services and enrichment programs to low-income people using community resources.

Community relations coordinator Maria Pearson said Inter-Faith Community Services is not a religious organization, but the group works with about 100 different local churches to provide services that bridge the gap between crisis, survival and independence.

"It's a place for churches to donate their money and their goods," Pearson said. "It's more of a clearing house for social services."

Pearson said the group's donations have decreased 40 percent last month, due to the struggling economy.

"People are feeling the pinch of the economy," she said. "The need for our help is up 20 percent."

The Highlands Ranch Stake of the LDS church is the main organizer of the annual food drive. Other churches involved are St. Mark Catholic Church, Pax Christi Catholic Church and St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
