It's not often you see a grown man twirling a baton -- unless you were at the Colorado Baton Council's "Sweetheart Spectacular" USTA Open Contest. (and hopefully you don't see them anywhere else!)
That's where a handful of nervous dads displayed their baton twirling talent in a special Father/Daughter duet in honor of Valentine's Day.
These guys were serious! You could tell they spent many an hours or rehersal getting ready to perform in front of the judges. They practiced in the hallways just outside the gym right up until their event (or "big moment") was announced.
It was impressive to watch these dads---and one brother---perform with such enthusiasm! No one wanted to let their little girl down!
In the end, the judges could only pick one winner (although they were all winner for just getting out on the floor in the first place!).
Nine-year-old Lucy & her dad, Rob walked away with the "golden" AMC gift card. Everyone was impressed with the dance and gymnastics moves she and her dad had perfected and incorporated into their minute and a half routine.
After the contest I asked Lucy if they watched "Dancing with the Stars". She gave a big grin and said, "Yes we do!" And it paid off Saturday.
The Colorado Baton Council plans on making the event a Valentine's Day tradition from now on!
