New curfew law goes into effect

On July 25 at a public hearing of the Board of County Commissioners, all three Commissioners voted unanimously to pass the newly amended Curfew Ordinance.
The previous curfew ordinance, #O993004, that had been in effect since 1993 was ruled unconstitutional by the courts.
The Sheriff's Office along with the County Attorney worked diligently to update the ordinance in order to present it to the Commissioners for approval.
The Sheriff's Office and Douglas County citizens have experienced increased disturbances, assemblies, fights and other criminal activities involving minors who have not reached their eighteenth birthday and who are on public streets and roads in public areas in the late evening and early hours.
This ordinance is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Douglas County.
"I am very pleased with the Commissioners approval and see it as a step in the right direction in dealing with issues involving juvenile crime and even victimization," stated Sheriff
Dave Weaver
.
The basic elements of the new ordinance, #O007001, are:
Age:
Anyone under the age of 18.
Hours:
Sunday through Thursday from 11 p.m.-5 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from midnight to 5 a.m.
Area:
Unincorporated only (to include Town of Larkspur)
Penalty:
Class II petty offense with possible fine up to $1,000
The new ordinance went to effect immediately as it was approved and signed by the Commissioners. The Cities of Lone Tree and Castle Rock as well as the Town of Parker all have curfews ordinances.
The full reading of the ordinance may be viewed on the Douglas County Web site at
