Community safety volunteer program starts in April
Contributed by: Lt. Alan Stanton on 1/16/2006

Sheriff David A. Weaver envisions a more creative and fiscally responsible solution for providing law enforcement services to the community through a citizen’s Community Safety Volunteer Program.

His community policing initiative involves supplementing sworn officers with civilian volunteers. Sheriff Weaver knows there are citizens who have vision and are willing and prepared to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours a month of their time for this policing partnership.

The program will result in a partnership that will ensure continued safety, security, and pride of ownership in our community.

The Community Safety Volunteer Program involves civilian volunteers who have an interest in law enforcement and assist the sheriff’s office by providing services to the community in those areas that do not require the attention of a sworn officer.

Volunteers are required to attend regular training sessions and often give presentations on crime prevention, assist with traffic control, complete reports, and handle calls that do not require a sworn officer.

Volunteers who do not wish to drive or respond to "calls" may handle the same types of duties in an office setting making this program suitable for all ages. Some volunteers may qualify for the Senior Tax Work off Program.

Volunteers are required to attend a citizen’s academy for ten weeks.
The Academy will begin on April 4, culminating with graduation on June 8. The classes will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Justice Center in Castle Rock.

The Academy will also meet on three Saturdays for Self
Defense, and Defensive Driving training. Each volunteer must complete a minimum of 30 hours "ride-along" with a patrol officer.

Some courses and material will be available online.

Minimum requirements include:
Must be 20 years of age or older
Must be a citizen of the United States
Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license
Must pass a polygraph and full background investigation
Have never been convicted of a felony
Have absolutely had no illegal drug use within the last three years and no alcohol related traffic offenses within five years
Ability to deal with confidential information and keep it confidential
Possess good public speaking and presentation skills

Applications are available online at www.dcsheriff.net <http://www.dcsheriff.net> or at the Sheriff’s Office. For further information on this program, please contact Captain Kim L. Castellano at 303-660-7516.
