YourHub.com Q&A: Randy Akers
Contributed by: YourHub.com on 4/16/2008

Metro District of Highlands Ranch Board of Directors candidate Randy Akers

Age: I am 54 years old.

My Family: My wife, Susan, and I have been married for 22 years. We have two children, ages 18 and 20.

For the last seven years, I have held the position of Administrator, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Northern Plains Office of Native American Programs.

My favorite place to hang out: The Highlands Ranch Library.

What I like most about living here: The people, the location, the high quality of life, the mountain views, our parks, trails and open spaces, excellent schools, the recreation centers, the public transportation, the libraries.
My interests and hobbies: painting, aikido, music, photography, bicycling, jogging.

I'm a backyard griller (my wife would say "burner"). It doesn't matter what the weather is or what's on the menu. Throw it on the grill and I'll make it smoke!
People who inspired me (and how): Winston Churchill, for his leadership, oratory skills, his "never surrender" attitude, his military and political acumen. Benjamin Franklin, for his renaissance interests and accomplishments, his political/social vision and commitment to establishing a foundation for the great future of the United States. Franklin Roosevelt, for his courage to persevere in light of the polio which struck him, and his Presidential leadership which brought the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. My mom, for her positive attitude, honesty, integrity, and her western values of self reliance and persistence she has shown for the last 81 years.

How I have contributed to the community: I have contributed to the community in many ways. For the last two years I have served as a Metrodistrict Board member and Advisory Board member. I have enjoyed a successful 28 year career as a public servant and lawyer working to establish government/private sector partnerships and build healthy, prosperous communities across the nation. I have helped young people further their legal education by being a moot court judge at DU College of Law. I am a member of the Colorado Indian Bar Association, a professional organization that promotes academic excellence in the field of Native American law. I volunteer as a photographer for the Highlands Ranch Community Band. But perhaps most important, I've contributed to the Highlands Ranch community for the last five years by being a homeowner and parent in Metro District 1, raising a family, and being a good neighbor and friend to many people.

Some of the core issues to focus on as we sustain and improve on Highland Ranch's quality of living are: Planned growth and economic development; good customer service and responsive, cost-effective government services; maintaining and improving our parks, trails and open spaces; roads, water, and other infrastructure; traffic congestion and the C470 corridor; transportation resources; fire and emergency services; law enforcement and public safety; and education.

Why I am running for elected office: My family and I have lived in Highlands Ranch for the last seven years, and highly value the people and community amenities that make Highlands Ranch a great place to call home. My years in public service have taught me that a successful community like Highlands Ranch doesn't just happen; it is the result of residents' participation, cooperation, support and hard work. Each of us has a responsibility to educate ourselves about the resources our community enjoys, the challenges we face, and the opportunities we can create in setting the course for Highlands Ranch's next 25 years.

We should invest in our families' futures by becoming personally involved in making Highlands Ranch a nationwide model for prosperous, healthy living. In this spirit of service, I am working to be elected as your representative on the Metro District Board.
