HRCA board candidate Q&A: Paul Meyers
Contributed by: Paul Meyers on 2/29/2008

Incumbent

My age: 47

My family: I'm happily married to my lovely, encouraging, and very supportive wife, Suzanne. We just got a puppy (a cockapoo named Buddy) who's a rambunctious little guy and certainly keeps us on our toes. My parents and my sister and her family (including my niece and nephew) live in Arizona. Suzanne's mom lives here and her brother and his family (including her niece and nephews) live in California.

Education: I have a bachelor's degree in aviation and business.

What I do: I'm a business owner (aviation management consulting firm). The firm provides a wide range of aviation management consulting services to airports, aviation businesses, and others who have an interest in the industry. We specialize exclusively in the general aviation segment of the industry (which is all aviation with exception of air carriers and government).

My favorite place in town to hang out: The Tattered Cover Book Store (located in the Highlands Ranch Town Center) is certainly a great place to hang out. I also enjoy having breakfast at the Egg and I, snagging a burger at Fat Burger, having lunch at Lansdowne Arms Bistro, getting some ice cream at Cold Stone, or having dinner at the Old Blinking Light. Shea has done a wonderful job with the Town Center - it's a great place to hang out.

What I like most about living here: I've lived in Highlands Ranch since 1991 - 17 years this April. For me, it's the strong sense of community. Suzanne and I have some really wonderful neighbors on our street. They would do anything for us (and for each other) and we would do anything for them. After that, it's the wide variety of amenities that are available including four first class recreational centers, trails, parks, and open space. Beyond that, we have access to nearly endless recreational opportunities and diverse cultural activities. We also get to experience all four seasons. While the winters seem to be getting longer and colder (the older I get), I love the fall in Colorado. One of my favorite things to do is jump in the airplane, fly somewhere in our great state, find a beautiful river or stream, and go fly fishing with my wife. While she usually catches more fish than me (at least that's what she'll tell you), the fish I catch are bigger than hers. Of course, after snapping a few pictures of the big ones, we let them go anyways.

My interests and hobbies: I'm an aircraft owner and instrument rated private pilot and I really enjoy flying. I also enjoy the outdoors and a wide variety of recreational activities and sports (fly fishing, hiking, biking, skiing, snow mobiling, jet skiing, carting, softball, racquetball - which I play at the Northridge Rec Center, and roller hockey - which I play at the Westridge Rec Center). I also like to read.

My favorite thing to cook: Both my wife and I love to cook. We had a special dinner party for some close friends a while back and we prepared the following meal: first course - grilled swordfish and pancetta on a rosemary skewer with shrimp and passion fruit salsa; second course - citrus and avocado salad with honey vinaigrette; third course - filet mignon with mole sauce, spicy grilled shrimp with mango salsa, and green chile risotto; fourth course - double-chocolate layer cake with coffee infusion; featured beers - Cerveza Pacifico Clara and La Cerveza Mas Fina Corona Extra; featured wine - Peter Lehmann (2003 Barossa Shiraz - Australia. We had a blast coming up with the menu and preparing (and serving) all of our friends. Other than that, we enjoy grilling and do that as much as we can (year-round)

People who inspired me (and how): I have been inspired by so many people - first and foremost by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I love reading the Bible - especially the New Testament. I love to read about Jesus, his ministry, and the profound effect he had (has) on people. I have also been inspired by great leaders - people like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, and Ronald Reagan.

How I have contributed to the community: I'm an active leader in my church (Cherry Hills Community Church) where I have led (or lead) in various ministries including small groups, family life (marriage), service, and missions and I'm an active leader in the Highlands Ranch community where I have led (or lead) at the HRCA and Team Highlands Ranch. I have served as HRCA Delegate for District #76 (4 years), Chair of HRCA's Public Issues Committee (2 years), and on HRCA's Board of Directors (for the past 2 years). For over a year now, I have served as one of the three HRCA representatives to Team Highlands Ranch, a mutual cooperation among organizations (including the Highlands Ranch Chamber of Commerce, Highlands Ranch Metro District, HRCA, and Douglas County Libraries, School District, and Government) to provide community gathering places, community events, and opportunities that strengthen the community, increase communication, and serve the residents in a cost effective manner.

The biggest issues facing Highlands Ranch now: Issues Important to HRCA:

•Enhancing property values and maintaining quality of life.
•Ensuring the operation, management, and maintenance of first class recreational facilities and top notch amenities and the provision of fulfilling recreational and cultural opportunities for all ages.
•Ensuring that HRCA is a well run organization, operated and managed by competent and fiscally responsible professionals who consistently provide outstanding administrative, operational, and recreational services to our members in the most cost-effective manner possible.
•Ensuring that HRCA maintains appropriate financial reserves and that HRCA is a responsible and accountable financial steward of member resources.
•Conveyance of the Mansion - Once the potential role of the HRCA (with respect to the future operation and management of the Mansion) is clear, I will only support conveyance if it (the potential role) is consistent with HRCA's mission and the desires of our members - as determined through a vetting process. Most importantly, if it (the potential role) does not make sense from a financial standpoint, I will not support conveyance of the Mansion.
•Conveyance of the Backcountry Wilderness Area (BWA) - Under agreement with Shea, the balance of the BWA is slated to be conveyed to the HRCA. This will be an extraordinary member asset. I will ensure that this area is operated and managed in accordance with HRCA's plan, that open space is preserved, and that the areas designated for future development are developed consistent with the desires of our members.

Issues Important to the Highlands Ranch community (Overall):

•Maintaining high quality infrastructure (i.e., roadways, walkways, fencing, parks, open space, utilities, etc.)
•Maintaining high quality law enforcement and emergency (and other public) services
•Ensuring that the government officials who have been elected to represent (and serve) our community are, indeed, doing just that.
•Economic development
•Environment stewardship (i.e., environmental protection, conservation, alternative fuels, etc.)
•Incorporation

Why I am running: I believe my background, experience, and education (and my analytical skills, communications capabilities, and leadership abilities) have been (and are) well-suited for serving on HRCA's Board of Directors. My number one priority has been (and will continue to be) serving HRCA's members in the most effective and honorable manner possible. I have done so (and will continue to do so) with complete honesty and uncompromising integrity. Over the past 6 years, I have developed excellent working relationships with delegates, committee members, staff members, fellow Board members, and outside advisors (and with representatives of other community organizations and government).

I believe in the mission of the HRCA and I'm fully committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the quality of life in our community remains at a high level and that Highlands Ranch continues to be a great place to live, work, and play. I'm an experienced servant-leader. I understand today's issues and I'm prepared for tomorrow's challenges. I'm not afraid to take on tough issues, ask hard questions, and make critical decisions. I'm passionate, energetic, properly motivated, and I have been (and will continue to be) fully committed to serving HRCA's members.
