Birth. Quite literally the most miraculous function us humans can do. As a small helpless bean-like fetus makes itself comfortable inside the womb, a war of words is spewing throughout the gay and Christian community, thanks to one man's controversial idea.
Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. a prevalent member of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary wrote a disputatious blog on his personal website
www.AlbertMohler.com
Mohler asks questions that many would not dare to even utter. "Is your baby gay? What if you could know? What if you could do something about it?"
This hypothetical can of worms Mohler opened has stirred the emotions of many homo and hetero sexuals, making this the new awkward icebreaker conversation while passing the mash potatoes at everyone's dinner table.
In Mohler's blog he discusses the scientific experimentation on the sexually dimorphic nucleus of a sheep's brain. The male sheep that they observed to be gay had a similar brain to the female sheep.
Thus, suggesting that being homosexual is un-avoidable and develops before we can even conceive what sexuality is. So the question still stands, what if it was possible to change your future children's sexual preference?
Many staunch believers in the various branches of Christian religious consider homosexuality be a sin. And might consider a form of medication that would subdue the rainbow.
Leviticus 18 states " You shall not lie with a male as with a woman" also "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them." The bible intensely states that homosexuality is a sin under the category of perversion and over-indulgence.
So wait. If what Mohler's belief that homosexuality is habitual to being born, wouldn't that contradict his Christian and far right beliefs?
Many conservative thinkers such as Mohler disagree with abortion. So if there was a way to treat homosexuality wouldn't that be like "aborting" that child's natural right? Mohler doesn't think so.
Although he addresses that there is simply not enough evidence that homosexuality is biological, he replies if it were possible it would be an effect of "the consequences of the fall and the effects of human sin."
Thusly, no different than being born with a disease.
He mentions a completely fictional story written by Tyler Gray entitled "Is your Baby Gay?" in which a couple decides to use a hormone patch to reverse the effect of homosexuality. Think of it as, gay control. This would underline an example of treatment to come, if this theory was ever proven scientifically and morally.
The gray matter between all these issues is this: is our brains wired with our sexual preferences before we're born? Or is it simply a lifestyle we lead. Perhaps we will never fully understand. What is clear is that gay or straight, we are all people that should be valued.
Even Mohler says, "Whether identified as heterosexual, homosexual, lesbian, transsexual, transgender, bisexual, or whatever -- are equally made in the image of God."
