Outdoor sculptures to grace local sites
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com on 5/7/2008

Area residents soon will notice several outdoor sculpture exhibits being set up around town as part of an effort to bring more public art to county residents.

The 2008-09 Art Encounters program will showcase a number of sculptures in various medias and styles in highly visible areas in the county, said Kim Smith, communications specialist with Douglas County.

The project also is designed to draw more visitors to the areas in which the sculptures are displayed, she said.

The Art Encounters idea, which is the first of its kind in Douglas County, was formed by the Douglas County Cultural Council, Smith said. The council put aside about $29,000 in Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) funding to bring the exhibits to the county.

The Public Art Advisory Committee selected a total of 14 sculptures to be on display from June 2008 to June 2009. Castle Rock has two, Highlands Ranch has three, Lone Tree has four and Parker has five, Smith said.

In Lone Tree, all four of the exhibits will be set up in conjunction with the opening of The Vistas at Park Meadows at 8433 Park Meadows Drive.

In Highlands Ranch, the three sculptures will be placed in front of each of three local recreation centers.

You can view all the sculptures by visiting www.douglas.co.us/artencounters.
