As a Florida native (just above sea level) I find it truly amazing and somewhat sad that so many Colorado natives and "transplants"neglect this family bonding experience.
This is the highest paved road in the United States!! Where else can you travel from 5280 feet above sea level to a staggering 14,240 feet passing through three life zones, ancient bristle cone pines and eco systems? Emerge yourself in the spring wild flowers, the smell of the evergreens, the cheery chirping of mountain birds, hiking/biking and picnicing along the way. There are numberous opportunities for fishing starting at Echo Lake Lodge where you can enjoy a restaurant/gift shop & bar while watching the local hummingbirds feed right outside the picturesque windows.
Since the weather changes quickly, my advice is to always call the Clear Creek Ranger Station at 303-567-3000 before planning your trip to Mt. Evans. Our family finds the trip most enjoyable if you plan it the evening before, packing a cooler (filled with bottled waters, snacks, etc), warm clothing, fishing poles, camera's, game boys, Ipods, etc. This way, there is less stress in the morning and everyone starts the day with a smile on their face.
Amazing, once in a lifetime experiences await you on Mt. Evans. On our first visit of the season(last Saturday) we were fortunate enough to see Big Horned Sheep, Mountain Goats, Marmots, Deer (outside Echo Lake Lodge), Elk (Evergreen) and many many cheerful chirping birds. You can enjoy a few pictures enclosed by reading the caption for each and clicking on those you chose to view. The weather in Denver was in the mid 70's however at the Summit it was 30 F with a wind chill of 5 F. Remember this when planning your outting as to truly enjoy it, you have to be comfortable. Take a camera and enjoy the views and wildlife, but remember these are wild animals and shouldn't be approached, fed or harassed.
(I tried to edit and instead wrote a comment, sorry. The correct Fee information is $10 for up to 3 consecutive days or $25 Seasons Pass).
Here is a great website for even more information. Hope you enjoy this treat as much as our family does.
