Nearly 300 Girl Scouts had the unique opportunity to learn more about what makes up 97 percent of the world's creatures - bugs, butterflies and other invertebrates. This interactive event at the Butterfly Pavilion on Sat., Sept, 30 attracted swarms of Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts as they earned their Eco-Explorer Try-it, Wildlife Badge and the Bugged by Bugs Patch.
Both Brownies and Juniors swarmed together to earn the Bugged by Bugs Patch. Girls learned about pests, noxious weeds and preventing pesticide pollution among other activities. Created by Mile Hi Council with help from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Bugged by Bugs Patch is part of Mile Hi Council's STEM program. Girl Scouts is committed to fostering an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among girls at a young age. By learning that STEM is all around them and exploring it can be fun, the council hopes girls will develop STEM skills and consider careers in these fields.
"This event is a great opportunity for girls to explore native and non-native habitats and insects," said Nicole Bickford, Youth Education Coordinator for the Butterfly Pavilion. "There is an incredible amount of diversity at the micro level and today we are just tapping the surface of the amazing world of insects."
Girl Scouts - Mile Hi Council is where girls in Denver and 13 surrounding counties gain courage, confidence and character alongside a group of girls who will be their friends for life. It's a safe place for girls to explore their world, develop an understanding and empathy for others and take action to make the world a better place. Girls are guided by committed, caring adults who make learning fun. No other activity helps each girl achieve her personal leadership pathway like Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts has been the nation's leading expert on girls for nearly 100 years.
