Kids mutton bustin' champs at Rodeo in the Ranch

At the fifth annual Rodeo in the Ranch, sponsored by the Highlands Ranch Community Association, local children opened the two-day event July 11 with some good ol' mutton bustin'.

To the right are photos of kids - both "rookies" and "seasoned vets" - who exhibited their skills in hanging on to the sheep for as long as they could during this year's rodeo in Highlands Ranch.

Thanks, Therese. Yeah, I felt bad for all the little guys (and girls) who got trampled. Ryan is OK now, I assume? Good thing for all that protective gear. It was a fun event to photograph, that's for sure.

Steve--thanks so much for being there! These are great! You caught Ryan right before he got stomped on the chest by his sheep as it ran over him. It really made me appreciate those vests and head gear. Ryan and I got to hang out in the medical trailer for a few minutes with an ice bag while the trainer checked him out. All the bronc riders getting taped up for their rides talked to him about their bumps and bruises from getting tossed off the bucking horses. Being in the medical trailer with all his "fellow" rodeo contestants was highlight of the rodeo for Ryan--more memorable than the 3' tall trophy!
