The BOM Squad Takes Action in Denver
Contributed by: Cheri MacArthur on 7/9/2007

In late April of this year, my brother Bill was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Of course, the entire family wanted to do whatever we could to help out him, his wife and my nephews (ages 14 and 11). Unfortunately, myself, my mother, cousin and aunt, along with our respective spouses, had recently relocated from California (where Bill is) to the Denver Metro Area and could not be near to run errands, drive Bill to doctors' appointments or shuttle his boys to their respective baseball practices and games.

Near the end of May, we stumbled upon the National Brain Tumor Foundation's (NBTF) website advertising the Angel Adventure Walk to raise funds for brain tumor research and patient support. As luck would have it, a walk was taking place on June 9th in Denver. Although the walk was to take place in just over a week, our Denver-area family members formed "The BOM Squad" and registered to walk and started soliciting donations. We took on the name of The BOM Squad because Bill is famous for acting like the "boss of me". (it could be anyone -his wife, cousins, kids) and is affectionately known as "Bom" by us. Whenever we would all be together and trying to decide where to eat or which movie to see,Bom would have a suggestion. Anyways, in just over a week, The BOM Squad was able to raise $5,610 to support NBTF, which was the most raised by any team at the Denver walk. Including the contributions raised by The BOM Squad, over $90,000 was raised for this cause.

One morning, my husband saw the advertisement for the Colorado Rockies' suite and suggested that we submit this story, and if it was chosen, we could take the members of The BOM Squad to celebrate our successful foundering efforts. I thought it was a great idea since The BOM Squad was made up of 9 members. In addition, Bill's sons will be visiting us in Colorado and would be present for the August 8th game against Milwaukee and could also attend so I decided to submit this story.

Obviously, any illness like this is a huge toll on a family, but I think that it is especially hard on my nephews. They are used to a dad who coached their little league teams, attended all their games and would play catch or practice with them regularly. Now, Bill simply cannot keep up with the boys while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. My nephews have really had to grow up quickly this summer and take on extra responsibilities at home, so while on vacation here in August, they deserve a break. And, although we had planned to take them to a Rockies game anyway, it would be extra special if they could watch the game from a suite.
