Pride and Prejudice 2005.
Contributed by: Robin Ricci on 5/26/2008

The book, Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austin was published in 1813, and the movie was released in 2005. It is hard to believe that it's story still haunts a 16 year old in 2008, with its story of love and compassion. While I am normally not a fan of films in which a women's only aspiration in life is to be married off for the benefit of money and not love, this movie drastically changed that opinion and showed that love is still more important than the money. The main character, Elizabeth Bennett (Keira Knightly) is a poor woman with five sisters and a mother who wants nothing more than for them to marry rich men. Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) meets Miss Elizabeth at a ball and declines her offer to dance. She over hears Mr. Darcy telling Mr. Bingley ( Simon Woods) that she is not handsome enough for her to catch his eye. From that moment on she swears that she would loathe Mr. Darcy for all eternity, and that feeling only increases when she finds out that he has betrayed a friend and spilt up her sister and Mr. Bingley when they were so much in love. Unfortunately Mr. Darcy has grown fond of Elizabeth and has no idea of her knowledge. As time goes on her realizes that he is falling deeply in love with Miss Elizabeth. He decides to tell her he loves her and to ask for her hand in marriage only to be declined. Mr. Darcy drops a letter to her explaining himself and his actions and Miss Elizabeth realizes that her opinion of him was all wrong. He helps her find her sister Lydia who has run away and even gets Mr. Bingley and her sister,Jane back together. In the climax of the movie's plot Mr. Darcy utters the words that the story is most famous for, "You have bewitched me body and soul and I love, I love, I love you, I never wish to be parted from you from this day on." When I heard these words a chill went down my spin. Now all young children want to know that there is a prince out there from them but the beauty of this story is that you don't have to be perfect and exquisitely beautiful for a man to fall in love with you. I don't know how or why but this movie touched me very deeply and I have become a true romantic. I am assuming that it affected me so much because it gave me hope for the future and what qualities a man could hold, and unfortunately for them, I know have higher standards, romantic being the first bar raised. I applause Miss Austin for this wonderful book, for without it I would not have had the pleasure of stumbling across the film at Blockbuster and enjoying it so very much. My next conquest is to check out the book at my local library and hopefully watch Sense and Sensibility as well, for it looks as if it is another masterpiece. I would recommend this to anyone who is down on love, or in love for it is so brilliantly moving and wonderfully executed. I give this movie an A++, and once again two thumbs up for Austin.
