Local football team moves to Highlands Ranch
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com on 5/6/2008

Highlands Ranch recently landed the most successful minor league football team in the nation that nobody seems to know. The Denver Titans, who play in the Colorado Football Conference (CFC), will play all their home games this season at Shea Stadium, 3270 Redstone Park Circle, in Highlands Ranch. The team had played their home games in previous seasons in Thornton. "The Denver Titans are really excited to be in Highlands Ranch," said Mike Mahoney, the team's owner. "I think things are going to go really well here." The CFC league, which currently boasts 10 teams, was first started in 1987. Some of the league's players are looking for a shot to go on to play on a collegiate or professional level. "The other half are just playing for fun," he said. Mahoney, however, stresses the level of play in the league is very high. "The product is pretty darn good," he said. "There are some talented people in the area." Last year's starting quarterback, Garrett Mehl, was eventually taken by the Colorado Ice, who play in the United Indoor Football league. Other notable players in the CFC this year include former University of Colorado kicker Katie Hnida, who plays for the Colorado Cobras, and Rafael Mendoza, the University of Northern Colorado punter who was stabbed in the leg by the team's backup punter. The Titans are largely viewed as the class of the league, he said. The team has won the past six CFC championships and has played in eight of the last 10 championship games, he said. "We're hated around the league," he said. "Every team that plays against us, that's their Super Bowl." Mahoney moved the team to Highlands Ranch because the north end of the metro area had become saturated with too many other teams. As a gesture to his new fans, Mahoney is offering all home games at no charge. Instead of ticket sales, the team will accept donations such as non-perishable food, toiletries, school supplies or cash for local charities, he said. The team plays its first regular season home game at 7:30 p.m. June 7 at Shea Stadium against the Colorado Springs Flames. Go to www.denvertitans.com for information.
