March, 2008 - For the first time in 14 years, the Colorado Christian University (CCU) men's basketball team is headed to the NCAA Division II championship tournament. Announced March 9 during the Division II selection show, the eighth-seeded Cougars will tip-off the competition against the North Central Region's number-one-ranked Winona State Warriors this Saturday, March 15, at 6:00 p.m. in Winona, Minnesota.
The 18-12 Cougars are fresh off their best season since joining the NCAA's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). This will be their first NCAA championship appearance since the 1994 season when CCU was a member of the Colorado Athletic Conference. Led by all-American senior forward Brian Stamer, CCU ended the 2007-2008 regular season as the RMAC East Division champion, advancing to the RMAC tournament before falling 79-73 to Ft. Lewis in the title game.
The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee announced a field of 64 teams for this year's championship. Twenty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 42 teams, including CCU, were selected at large by the committee.
The 32-1 Winona Warriors finished last season as national runner-up, and head into the 2008 championship ranked third in the country.
