Local cycling club completes soggy MS150
Contributed by: Bernie Greenberg on 7/14/2006

Can we build an ark? That's the question most frequently asked on Saturday, July 8, as the MS150 slogged its way from Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch to Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

In 2006, the MS150 had its rainest day on record as very wet and soggy conditions greeted the riders all the way from Highlands Ranch to Colorado Springs on the first day of the MS150. Led by courageous riders of the Highlands Ranch Cycling Club, more than 2000 riders left Highlands Ranch and immediately encountered the effects of the rain as the route went up and over Daniels Park Road. This normally dirt road was a sea of slimy, slippery mud that dragged many riders down.

Parts of the 2006 route were closed due to washed out roads and the heavy rains. "If we had ridden the same route as two years ago, someone could have been killed", explained Bernie Greenberg, the President of the Highlands Ranch Cycling Club. This is because the 2004 route went from Conifer through Deckers and Westcliffe where many roads were destroyed by the weekend storm.

"I'm glad we are all safe and sound" stated HRCC member Bill Shenkin, a statement that was echoed by several other riders. But on Sunday as the riders made their way from Colorado Springs to Canon City, the rains eased and the sun even made a brief and welcome appearance.

"As bad as Saturday was, Sunday was perfect except for all the flat tires!" explained HRCC member Colin Kennedy, an elite class racing cyclist who led the team from Highlands Ranch. Flat tires were very common due to the washed out roads and road conditions.

The 2006 edition of the MS150 is expected to raise approximately $2,000,000 for the Colorado Chapter of the National MS Society. Multiple sclerosis is a debilitation disease that attacks the brain and spinal cords of patients. The hosts immune system attacks the protective myelin that covers brain and nerve tissue. There is presently no know cause or cure for MS.
