The Ice Ranch is a new ice rink located just North West of County Line and Broadway. As you tour the facility you realize this is not your fathers ice rink. The Ice Ranch has digital camera's, flat screen TV's galore, a film room that make you feel like part of the Monday Night Football crew working a telestrator, wi-fi for those parents at their kids practice and a business center. The Ice Ranch has something for everyone. Oh yeah, there are also two sheets of ice. The ice will be utilized for youth hockey, adult hockey and curling. The Ice Ranch will also offer a full service restaurant and pro-shop.
Curling you say, what is curling? The new curling leagues will give Highlands Ranch families a chance to have fun, learn a new sport, and maybe even become Olympic champions. Curling is very popular in Canada and parts of the Northern US, but has not really caught on in Colorado. Curling is a team sport with similarities to shuffleboard and bowling, played on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice by two teams of four players each. Teams alternate turns at sliding polished granite stones down the ice towards the target area called the
house
. Two sweepers with brooms accompany each rock and use the brooms and their best judgement along with direction from their other teammates to help direct the stones to their resting place. The nature of stone placement and shot selection has led some to refer to curling as "chess on ice". The Ice Ranch is going to make a promotional push to get people hooked. Offering a weekly Learn To Curl program and a couple leagues for the few experienced curlers already in the community The Ice Ranch hopes curling becomes a must-do activity for Highlands Ranch families. The Ice Ranch is also hoping to work with local community groups to run Bonspiels, curling's own unique hybrid of a tournament and a block party. Future leagues are planned for high school club teams, youth teams, and even senior teams.
Time will only tell if the Ranch is ready for curling, but I can tell you The Ice Ranch is ready.
