In 2007 the Highlands Ranch Cycling Club has named the Kings of Cycling. Two local riders, Mark Brown and Bill Shenkin beat out over 9,000 other riders to complete the triple crown of Colorado cycling, completing the MS 150, Triple By-Pass and Courage Classic on consecutive weekends.
The triple crown of cycling was possible in 2007 for the first time ever as the three giant cycling events solved an annual scheduling conflict by having their events on consecutive weekends instead of the same weekends. Over 9,000 cyclists took part in the three events.
Brown and Shenkin became the first cyclists to complete the triple crown riding for the Highlands Ranch Cycling Club, one of the largest cycling clubs in Colorado. Sponsored by Shea Homes and Bike Source, the HRCC as it is known, won the cycling category at the 2007 MS 150 for the 17th consecutive year.
"Completing the triple crown was my big goal of the year", stated Brown. "2007 worked out perfectly", added Shenkin, in commenting on how the weather conditions were outstanding three July weekends in a row, unlike the weather disasters of 2006.
"We are incredibly proud of Mark and Bill and this historic cycling achievement" stated Bernie Greenberg, the President, coach and founder of the local cycling club.
"To do what Mark and Bill did this year, competing not against a handful of cyclists, but over 9,000 riders, is simply incredible. We tip our hats to them both as they represent what is best about our club and our community. These three rides support very important charities in Colorado and Mark and Bill trained very hard and for most of the year to reach this goal."
Mark Brown is also known for bringing the national event, the Ride of Silence to Highlands Ranch. Brown is also a national team leader for EDS and Shenkin runs the local firm CEFO, Inc. Both are known affectionately by the cycling club as two of the diesels, riders that other riders like to ride along with since they block the wind and pull the others along for miles.
Shenkin is pictured here along with fellow diesel, Travis Peutz of Castle Pines.
