Cancer of another color (Yellow Ribbon)
Contributed by: Jackie Treece on 10/8/2007

I am a bladder cancer Survivor. Bladder cancer is extremely rare in women. It generally strikes older men who are or were smokers. I never smoked; I'm female, and in my 40's. Of course breast cancer can strike men too.

Most of us will experience cancer in our families and/or circle of friends, if not personally. The statistics in the U.S. are sobering: One in three Americans is expected to get cancer in his or her lifetime.

My cancer journey has been filled with blessings. I am grateful for the experience, and for the tremendous support of family and friends, as well as pastors, doctors, healers and teachers. Through major surgery, chemo and beyond, so many people were there for me, and my husband and son. I received countless prayers, cards, emails, gifts, meals and rides. Thank you!

I just received an "all clear" from my doctor (she is also a Ken Caryl resident, and urologist extraordinaire!). It is great to know cancer can be beaten. The following is adapted from a poem from an unknown author: "Cancer cannot cripple love, shatter hope, corrode faith, take away peace, destroy confidence, kill friendship, suppress memories, silence courage, invade the soul, nor can cancer conquer the spirit. Cancer is so very limited."

As a firm believer in nutritional healing, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to eat their fruits and veggies! Nutrition is key for healing and prevention. My life (and diet) is forever changed for the better.

I know (too many!) breast cancer patients. Good luck to you. May you all be Survivors too.
