Winter: Tancredo internal polls show race is even
Contributed by: Michael Robinson on 10/10/2006

Sixth Congressional District Candidate Bill Winter claimed on Oct. 9 that internal polling from rival Tom Tancredo's camp show his race with Tancredo is a dead heat. Appearing at a joint rally with Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold at the Oriental Theatre in North Denver, Winter lashed out at Tancredo's Immigration Stance, asserting that 63% of Coloradoans agree with the more comprehensive approach championed by Sen. John McCain.

Feingold's Progressive Patriots Fund has selected the Tancredo held 6th C.D. as one to try and take for the Democrats. The Progressive Patriots organization has posted one of its paid staff with the Winter campaign for the duration of the race and Feingold came to Denver to campaign and raise money for Winter. Some notable quotes from Winter and Finegold:

Winter - "...and polling now shows us even and as far as we can tell, its his (Tancredo) polling that shows it."

"I am not willing to continue sacrificing American and Iraqi lives for a 'stay the course' policy that has clearly failed."

(About Bailey School shooting) "My biggest problem with Tom Tancredo is not about issues or philosophy. It's 'Why don't you do your job?'. We've had these 2 incidents (Columbine and Bailey) and I don't recall him doing anything about it."

"He (Tancredo) has been cut off by his party both national and state wide. He is in a feud with the State Party."

Feingold - " It is absolutely possible and real that we can beat this Tancredo fellow."

"The idea of putting up a a wall won't work and is an ugly concept."

"This guy Tancredo is a symbol of devisiveness and a harmful attitude about the future."

"The Bush Administration had a list that was on the State Department web site two months after 9-11, listing 45 countries where our country believed Al Quaeda was operating. Iraq wasn't on their list."

What happened to the pro Winter comments that were here? Did somebody delete them? I'll just re-post mine. A number of Tom Tancredo's constituents attended the Conference on School Safety yesterday hosted by George W Bush to discuss the tragic incidents at Columbine and Bailey among others. Tom Tancredo did not attend. His week has been devoted to making the arrest of Dog The Bounty Hunter an immigration issue. As a political moderate, I would certainly prefer to be represented by somebody who will fairly address all the issues that directly affect this district. Tom Tancredo is singularly obsessed with immigration. The Senate proposed a decent plan. Tom Tancredo flatly rejected it. His unwillingness to compromise is an impediment to implementing a viable resolution - ever.

Hmm. Now, as a pretty average 6th District voter (fairly conservative socially, pro-defense, etc.) I would think that - should Mr. Winter hope to stand a snowball's chance in hades of taking Tancredo's place via the "I'm a different Democrat!"-shtick, he might wish to reconsider his decision to align himself with folks like Russ Feingold. Y'know - given the fact that a vote for Winter is a vote for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (oh, the agony...). Just a thought.

I'm sure you reported this as "what you saw." It seems that Feingold and Winter did nothing but criticize Tancredo and provided little or no different ideas themselves. After reading this story I still have no idea what Mr. Winters proposes as solutions. I am particularly confused by the statement, "My biggest problem with Tom Tancredo is not about issues or philosophy. It's 'Why don't you do your job?'. We've had these 2 incidents (Columbine and Bailey) and I don't recall him doing anything about it." My question is, what would Mr. Winter have done about Columbine and Bailey? To suggest that Mr. Tancredo or anyone else in Washington could have done something to stop the school tragedies is just puerile. If Mr. Tancredo could have done something, why not several hundred other congressional representatives? Perhaps Mr. Tancredo just hates children?
