Sanchez Elementary growing community spirit
Contributed by: Sherrill Jones on 5/11/2007

The students, teachers, parents and staff at Alicia Sanchez Elementary spent Friday, May 11th, putting into practice what they have been learning all year; growing and building a community spirit. Through a grant written by fifth grade teacher, Grant Swift, and school counselor, Carl Sanchez, the school received funding from Lowe's to plant the berms surrounding Sanchez Elementary.

The fifth grade students did much of the work, helping the other grades with their areas. Fifth graders spent last week teaching each grade level 'how to' plant their gardens. Then each grade level was assigned a team of fifth graders to assist in the actual planting.

Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Swift chose plants that were native to our area, making the berms relatively easy to maintain, and drought resistant. The berms were mapped out and assigned to each class. Then the classes were able to choose the plants that would be planted in their 'gardens'.

What looked like a day of chaos, was actually a well choreographed day of community 'team-building' and cooperation. And the result , is a beautiful new face-lift for Sanchez Elementary that the Sanchez community can be proud of.
