Kids give it their all in TRY-athlon event
Contributed by: Kristin Morin/YourHub.com on 7/16/2008

Orange cones littered the parking lot and grass at LaMont Does Park, 500 W. South Boulder Road, July 11 and dozens of kids stood around, wearing a strange combination of helmets, tennis shoes and swim goggles.

The athletes, ages 6 to 11, were waiting for the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center TRY-athlon to begin.

As 11 a.m. approached, the youngster were divided into age group and the 6- and 7-year-olds grabbed their bicycles and headed to the starting line.

"Ready, set...go!" yelled one of the event coordinators.

All the participants had to ride their bikes through a short course then sprint around the park and end by doing a lap or two in the pool. The course varied slightly in length for each age group.

The purpose of the event was for the kids to try their best and each participant received a ribbon and Popsicle when they were done competing.

"(The event) is good because it's really short so you don't feel like you're going to faint," said Emma Perkins, 8, of Erie.

"And because you get Popsicles for free," Quinn Precourt, 8, of Erie, added.

Mothers Stephany Precourt and Michelle Perkins laughed, remarking that they could have bought a lot of Popsicles for the $17 entry fee for the TRY-athlon.

The girls plan to compete in next year's event as well.

"I'm going to do it until I'm too old," Emma said.
