Marching band gives teens a sense of purpose
Contributed by: rosario russi on 10/20/2006

I believe the Centaurus High School Band Booster Organization deserves this award.

When we think about extracurricular activities to keep teens engaged and out of trouble, many of us think about sports. As a result, more companies are willing to sponsor the football, baseball or soccer team, rather than the band.

Marching band is a very expensive activity. Besides the instruments and the uniforms, which need to be replaced every few years, in order for the band to participate in competitions, we need to pay for buses to transport the kids, rent a truck to move the instruments and props, pay entry fees, music and marching layouts.

Currently, all of this is being supported by fundraising events. But Centaurus HS Band is not very big (this year it competes in the 3A division, with about 45 students), which makes it difficult to raise the many thousands of dollars that are needed.

Marching band is a fabulous activity: it combines almost military discipline with musical arts. Some kids have expressed that were it not for band, they wouldn't be motivated to go to school!!

And band is extremely involved! Besides the daily first class period, these young people rehearse every Wednesday evening, many Saturdays, sometimes all day, and play at football games, competitions and other local or statewide events.

Our children are our future. Teens that find a purpose in life have a higher degree of self-esteem and tend to stay out of trouble. Please consider giving them your support!
