The Warrior varsity was itching for a new start after the Friday, 9/23 defeat at the hands of Conifer on the Warriors’ turf. DEvelyn has been in a rebuilding year. With an extraordinary passer and athlete in their talented QB #12, Mark Schaffer, the Jaguars attack used the shotgun and play option pass most of the game.
The Warriors came out of the locker room in a scoring attack that put two touchdowns on the board in the first quarter and another in the early minutes of the second quarter. Turnovers in the form of interceptions stifled the Jaguars attack time and time again. The pass defense of the Warriors had to bend but never broke. The relatively infrequent Jaguars ground game owed its occasional success to the Warriors’ expecting to see another pass.

With a 4th and long the Jags went to their punter with the ball on the 38.

Rey Navarrete #16 ran for a first down on the first Warrior play from scrimmage. Rey ran again for a 4 yard gain leaving 2nd and 6. Punter, Chris Rubeck (#11) dropped back for the kick, delivering an impressive 50 yard boot even after handling a low snap from center. With the favorable Warrior bound the ball ended up on the D’Evelyn 5 yard line.
D’Evelyn’s first play was a long pass that came close to being intercepted. On the next play the Jags returned to the air, only to have Warrior #45, Joshua Sipes drill the receiver causing the receiver to miss, leaving a 3rd and 10 on the 5. Sticking to the air, the Jags threw again but the pass was behind the receiver, causing a 4th down situation.

Jag QB, #12 Mark Schaffer threw again to #27, Luke Polichio, completing it for a 7 yard gain, leaving a 2nd and 3. Schaffer dropped back again on the next play but could not connect down the middle. Mixing it up, the Jags tried a line plunge for what would have been a first down had there not been a penalty against them causing the ball to be put back for a replay of a 3rd and 7 situation. The Jags QB then returned to passing with a failed attempt to connect to #2, Anthony Baldassari as both Tyler Sharp (Warrior #80) and Dallas Vermillion (#4) blanketed the play with excellent D back coverage.

Danny Ferrari #1 followed up with yet another excellent 43 yard run down to the 5 yard line. Power back Rey Navarrete then got the call and delivered another 3 yards, making it 2nd and goal on the 2. The Varsity Warriors return home next week on Saturday, October 8th for a 1 pm contest with Elizabeth. The Cardinals will be looking to get even from their 2004 loss at home against the Warriors. Elizabeth is having a 2 and 3 overall season and a 2 and 2 in conference record. The Cardinals lost the season non-conference away opener to Florence. Following that, they were beaten by Conifer at home. The next two games were in the win column against D’Evelyn and the Englewood. Last Friday (9/30) the Alameda Pirates delivered the Cardinals another loss at home.
The stakes are high for both Centaurus and Elizabeth as they both enter the toughest competition in the Metro 3A Conference.
