Blog Entry 10 of 24 My Life: Beer and Blogs
I'm a new media guy who happens to live in the Napa Valley of beer. This blog will chronicle my adventures through beers, blogs and everything else. Cheers!

I drank Session and learned a lesson
Contributed by: Justinian Hatfield   on 12/17/2007

We've all bought an entire CD based on one song and then hated the rest of the CD, right? Well, I kinda did the same thing with Full Sail's Session Premium Lager.

I love everything about this beer, except for, well, the beer. And for that, I can't blame the beer. Judged on its merits as a American Pilsner (think Coors and Bud), I'm sure it comes out at the head of the class. But I don't like American Pilsners.

Now, I had a feeling this was going to happen. You see, when I wrote my post about drinking beer in college, I became nostalgic for the days when I drank cheap beer out of 11 oz bottles, with games under the caps.

Well, nostalgia is what led Full Sail to brew this beer (that or it's an inside joke amongst the craft brewers). Session was designed to bring back the taste of pre-Prohibition American Lagers.

So with my nostalgia in mind, here's what I do like about Session Premium Lager.

It comes in a cardboard box (just like Olympia) of 12, 11-ounce bottles (just like Olympia). Under the screw caps, is a game (just like Olympia), but this is of the rock-paper-scissors variety. So all that made me happy.

But then I tasted it. Just like Olympia it's overly fizzy. The first bottle I drank straight out of the bottle, too afraid to see what this beer looked like. The second I poured and it was a crystal clear yellow just like all the other Pale American Lagers. I haven't had a beer that yellow since I drank that Miller High Life in October. But again, that's the style of the beer and if I was judging it based on style, this would be a good thing.

This beer has a nice white foamy head and lots of little bubbles, which reminded me of champagne.

I think had I consumed this beer after a long, hot summer hike, it would have tasted a lot better than drinking it on the couch on a snowy winter day in December.
But the bright side is I now have some beer to give to all those people who visit and don't necessarily like microbrews. I've also got a beer that I can use as a wager. When I meet someone who says they've never tasted a craft brew that they've liked, I can say, "I've got one you're guaranteed to like!"

The real question now is what to do with the 10 bottles of Session Lager I have left over.

Anyone want a beer?

I got Scissors and a Rock so I'm winning :-) It cost about $11 for the 12 pack, which is equal to an 11 pack of normal sized beers.

I think the game under the cap sounds rather fun -- sort of like the Popsicle sticks with the jokes. How much does the 12-pack set you back?

Yeah, It's definitely the wrong season for this one! Only 4 or 5 months to go!

Coincidentally, I just tried Session a couple of weeks ago. I like light and bubbly, so this was right up my alley. Try it again on a hot summer afternoon and let us know what you think. Speaking of Summer......... that sounds pretty good right now!
