Blog Entry 13 of 24 My Life: Beer and Blogs
I'm a new media guy who happens to live in the Napa Valley of beer. This blog will chronicle my adventures through beers, blogs and everything else. Cheers!

A lager fit for the Christmas table
Contributed by: Justinian Hatfield   on 12/21/2007

On tap today (metaphorically speaking) is Samuel Adams' Winter Lager.

There is no mistaking that this is a lager, it's rather light and has that characteristic lager crispness that makes lagers taste so good on a hot day.
But, this is a big, dark wheat lager that will stand up to the coldest of days.

It pours a nice crystal clear reddish orange and has a nice foamy head. It's aroma is definitely that of a lager, although there is a hint of some mystery Winter spices and I picked up another hint of orange peel.

This isn't one of those beers that I'll only drink one of at a time. It's light enough and tasty enough that it's easy drinking.

It's got a nice sweet malt taste along with some noticeable spices, but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on them. Nutmeg? Cloves?

The beer is well-balanced with just a tad of hop bitterness at the very end. There is a slight metallic and grassy aftertaste, but if you take another sip it goes away.

The bottom line is this is an excellent choice for Christmas dinner. It will go well with Turkey, Ham and even Tofurky. Not too mention Bud and Coors drinkers won't complain about it.

Name: Samuel Adams' Winter Lager
Type: Wheat Lager
Price: About $8 per six pack
ABV: 5.8%
Rating: 4 out of 5
Availability: Widespread through the Season

Hey Nikki, I'd be happy to review a pint (or two) of Guinness. Look for it after Christmas.

You write so descriptively, it almost makes me wish I liked beer. I only drink one, so could you review a pint of Guinness? Then I will have a ready excuse to get out and have one...you know, for 'research purposes'.
