Many thanks to Anne for sharing her thoughts and artwork for our readers. From the Garden is a lovely exhibit, and we thank her for supporting LAC arts. My next post will feature the award winners.
1. I know you are a signature member of the Colorado Watercolor Society and the Western Colorado Watercolor Society. Have you tried other media? What made you settle on watercolor?
Watercolor is my favorite medium but occasionally I try working with acrylic, oil, mixed mediums and ink. Each medium has their own quality, sometimes it is stimulating to go out of my comfort zone and try other mediums.
2. When you jury an exhibit, do you have a criteria you follow? How important is presentation of the artwork to you (mats, frames, etc.?)
Yes, I follow the principals of design with a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. A painting should be filled with lights and darks, sunlight and shadows. The contrast between the two creates interest and excitement. The presentation of the art work is one of the main factors for the piece.
3. What artists, living or not, inspire you? Years ago, I took several workshops with Mary De Loyht Arendt. I really admired her colors and design in floral.
4. We all have challenges being an artist, what is your current biggest challenge? What is a challenge you feel you have conquered? My biggest challenge is to find more time to paint, by setting aside several hours a day to paint, experiment to learn and create new works and paint with fellow artists.
5. Describe a "day in the life" of Anne Martinez.
Everyday my life goes in different directions, but usually I work in my garden the first thing in the morning. The flowers in my garden give me inspiration to create my paintings. I sometimes take early morning walks, and admire the beauty of nature all around me.
The From the Garden Exhibit is on display in the Loft at the LAC Gallerythrough July 10th. The Gallery is open M-Sat. You can call 303-980-0625 for hours and directions. We'd love to have you come in and see the local talent in the Denver area.
