Eyeballing dryer sheets

A recent trip to the eye doctor revealed my deteriorating eyesight. Not a big surprise to me. In middle age, reading fine print becomes increasingly difficult for some of us, as well as other daily tasks that require 20/20 vision. My personal situation is made even more problematic given my stubbornness. I don't like wearing glasses, but I no longer have a choice.

My procurement of a stronger prescription proved invaluable. In particular, the realization that my 401k and the cleanliness of my home had both taken a sharp turn downward. Leaving the Dow and S&P 500 to the experts, I turned to my inner clean freak. There she was looking back at me in the mirror. The higher magnification showed a bit older looking woman than I had remembered. Apparently my inability to see clearly had me in denial on many levels.

As one things leads to another, I have discovered that dryer sheets are a phenomenal cleaning companion. I thought my house was clean and tidy, till I put on new glasses. Tidy, yes. Clean, no!

I remembered hearing about using dryer sheets to remove stubborn, baked on food from pans and casserole dishes. It really works, so why not try it on other cleaning projects.

Armed with new spectacles, and some used dryer sheets, I got to work.

Sweeping the room with a glance, I thought about and, briefly entertained the old idea, but the job required real elbow grease and I was up for the challenge.

The most impressive thing that came from my cleaning frenzy are my exquisitely clean shower doors. They looked brand new. After scrubbing them with an unused sheet, I rinsed them off and then used a clean cloth that brought them to perfection.

Using dryer sheets for cleaning is nothing new, and it's not for everyone. If you have allergies, you probably shouldn't use them for any purpose. Some self renowned experts even claim they are toxic.

I still don't like wearing glasses, but "I can see clearly now." I hadn't realized all I'd been missing, but now, when I tell you how gorgeous my grand babies are, I mean it this time. Their beauty has grown exponentially, so I guess my new optical attire is well worth the hassle after all.

What an eye-opening experience.

When I was in Florida a few months ago, one of the natives suggested I rub dryer sheets on my skin to repel the noseeums. I don't think it worked. I got more bites than anyone.

Katherine, I feel your pain. I threw away a perfectly good set of contact lenses because....because...well, because I did not like much of what I saw with the improved vision they provided! Poor close-up vision in middle age and beyond is a bonus.

I think I'm going to try taping dryer sheets to my cat's rear end.......

I submit for your approval the following equation: Bored 6 year old + dryer sheet + dirty shower door = Happy Mama :-)

Great advice. I wonder how they work on desert sand? I'll report back in a few weeks.

Katherine, it is always a shock to me when I look at my kitchen sink with my glasses on. Most of the time, I just leave them off and everything looks fine.

I have never used dryer sheets, not because of chemicals, but because I viewed them as just another item marketed as something I need when I don't. I may have to rethink that if it will get my shower doors clean. But I suspect your shower doors were in better shape in the first place.

Another eye-opening experience is cataract surgery. I didn't realize my last cataract was so bad until I had it replaced and could experience my new sight.

I stopped using dryer sheets because I read about the toxic chemicals used to make them, but I do miss the Downy fresh scent wafting form warm piles of laundry. Ahhhh ...

Apparently I need to have dryer sheets ahndy in my house. Too bad they won't just do the dishes for me, that's what I'm looking for:)
