Blog Entry 8 of 13 Jewel's Journal
Mom (Gail) took me to an evaluation in February, 2007. On our way there, I tipped my head real cute and asked, "What's an evaluation?" She said Denver Pet Partners was going to see if I can pass the temperament test for therapy dogs. No sweat! I was registered as a therapy dog a few weeks later, and Mom got me a uniform. My little green vest shows people that I've got an important job to do when I'm wearing it. Watch my blog for future entries about how the kids and I are doing!

Retrieving baseballs from San Francisco Bay

I thought I was a smart little dog about the jobs that dogs do. I was surprised this afternoon when I saw Jill for literacy again. I did not know some of this stuff that she read to me from a book titled, " Hardworking Puppies," by Lynn Reiser.

The book also teaches subtraction. Ten puppies are looking for work. The first one got a job as a firefighter puppy. Ten minus one left nine puppies. The next one got a job as a water rescue puppy. Nine minus one left eight puppies. You will have to read the book to learn about all the jobs the puppies have.

We dogs are pretty useful for our human friends. For instance, dachshunds and terriers keep farmland free of rodents, huskies pull sleds in snowy places that cars can't go. Retrievers bring ducks to hunters, collies work with livestock and German shepherds help police bring in criminals. Lots of breeds are helpful in hospitals and nursing homes as therapy dogs.

This book had some news for me. It says that dalmations keep an eye on the firehouse and that herding dogs help groundskeepers keep geese under control at parks, playgrounds and golf courses. Did you know that Portuguese water dogs dive into the San Francisco Bay to fetch home-run baseballs? What a cool job, if you don't mind water in your nose. Maybe the dog pawtographs the balls for the baseball players!

I have a few pictures of the book attached above. When you look at picture three (click it to enlarge), you will see neat notes about some jobs that dogs have. The picture isn't very clear to read, so you will have to check it out at the library as soon as Mom brings it back. Put it on hold!
